Reaching better outcome by looking for the 3rd Alternative
One of my colleagues made the following comment early on in our working relationship - 'If ever we agree on everything then one us in superfluous.' It's the different perspectives that create new ideas and that's extremely powerful in any business or family situation.
In the family business world, conflict is sometimes often seen as a bad thing. Something to be avoided or managed. However conflict is a natural part of all relationships and certainly is frequently seen in family businesses. I believe it represents the greatest of opportunities. But only if it is managed to produce productive outcomes.
In his final book, 'The 3rd Alternative', Steven Covey of '7 Habits of Highly Effective People' fame, offers an approach that means that conflicting views can be managed to produce outcomes beyond the expectation of either party.
