Family Business Blog

Feb 16, 2018
Tools for Effective Communication
Our last blog asked the question, ‘Are you Communicating Effectively?’ We also highlighted three traps that families in business often fall into. This blog looks at one of these, which we call the behavioural style trap and introduce you to ways of avoiding it.
Communication issues often arise because we presume that others are on our wave-length and that we’re on theirs. This is generally the exception rather the rule.
The reality is that we all have different ways of processing information. It has been found that the most effective people are those who understand themselves so that they can develop strategies to meet the demands of their environment.
DISC – The Language of Observable Behaviour
DISC is the language of observable behaviour. It enables you to know your behavioural style and recognise the behavioural style of others. In doing so it increases your understanding of others. You can then learn to adapt and blend your style for more effective communication and to build better relationships.
As a neutral language DISC has nothing to do with right or wrong (which are based on values and beliefs) it only describes the differences in how people approach problems, other people, pace and procedures.
Behavioural characteristics can be grouped into four styles: dominance (D), influence (I), steadiness (S), and compliance (C).
These styles indicate how people –
  • Respond to problems and challenges
  • Influence others to one’s point of view
  • Respond to the environment,
  • Respond to rules and procedures set by others

Understanding style similarities and differences is the first step in resolving and preventing conflict. By using the language you can bring out the best in the people you interact with.
The most effective way to gain the commitment and co-operation of others is to –
  • get into their world and blend with their behavioural style
  • observe a person’s body language and how they act and interact with others
  • notice clues in their work and living areas and
  • adapt to their style

By learning and using the DISC language, you will know your behavioural style and recognise the behavioural style of others. With this knowledge you can learn how to adapt and blend your style for more effective communication and maximise your effectiveness in people interactions.
